The Marienplatz
and Viktualienmarkt

Munich's Marienplatz with the New Town Hall is the world-famous centre of the Bavarian capital. Whether it's a carillon, Christmas market, master party or a joyful stroll with people from all over the world - there's plenty going on around the Mariensäule every season of the year.

The Viktualienmarkt is the culinary centre of Munich and worth a visit at any time of the year. There are snack stands and a cosy beer garden with a maypole. And Munich's good parlour is not only worth a visit for lunch! Open from Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the latest.

The Oktoberfest

The Oktoberfest in Munich (dialect: Wiesn) is the largest folk festival in the world. It has taken place on the Theresienwiese in the Bavarian capital Munich since 1810 and is visited by around six million people every year. For the Oktoberfest, the Munich breweries brew a special beer that must have an original gravity of at least 13.5 % and contains approx. 5.8 to 6.4 percent by volume alcohol.

More and more guests come from abroad, mainly from Italy, the USA, Japan and Australia. In recent years there has been a trend towards traditional costumes: more and more visitors to the Wiesn went there with Lederhosen or Dirndl.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein is the most famous of Ludwig II's castles and one of the most famous sights in Germany. The Neuschwanstein, often referred to as a "fairytale castle", can be visited and is open to visitors almost all year round.

Neuschwanstein Castle stands above Hohenschwangau near Füssen. The building was erected from 1869 for the bayerischen König Ludwig II. as an idealized representation of a knight's castle from the Middle Ages.
